What a wonderful discovery I made today!
Huayuan Chinese Academy will be holding a 3-week summer program (July 8-26, 2013) which will be FREE to all MCPS students. This free program is open to all students in Mongtomery County, MD, especially those low-SES students with little or no Chinese language background. The camp will be located at Gaithersburg Elementary School offering up to 40 students (rising grade 2-5) to learn the Chinese language and culture integrated with STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). The program theme is, "Explore Water, an Essential Element of Life". At the end of the camp, students will be able to communicate in Chinese to greet each other, exchange simple information about such topics as weather, family members, three states of water, buoyancy, and water pollution, and follow basic scientific experimental directions in Chinese. To learn more, see the HYCA Startalk STEM - Integrated Chinese Learing Program.
This is one of 4 Chinese programs funded by Star Talk in Maryland. Star Talk is a part of the National Security Language Initiative announced by former President Bush in January of 2006. The initiative seeks to expand and improve the teaching and learning of strategically important world languages that are not now taught in the US. Huayuan Chinese Academy is fortunate to receive the award of this grant. HYCA is the first after-school Chinese educational institute in the greater Washington DC metro area and operate in the Montgomery county (MD) public school facilities all over the county.
Kuddos to MCPS! I LOVE when the county can collaborate to programs such as these to enrich our children's cultures and love of languages!
