Upcoming MoCo Volunteer Opportunities

Tax Day (sarcastic Yah).  After paying some extra cash to Uncle Sam today, I can't help but feel I need to do some good in my community. 

Here in Montgomery County, Maryland, all citizens are encouraged to help the community and volunteer, especially with Earth Day coming up this weekend!  There are organizations such as the Montgomery County Volunteer Center that helps the general public hook up with nonprofits for year round opportunities.  Even MoCo Public School systems require Student Service Learning (SSL) hours to graduate!

Here are some upcoming local volunteer opportunities in case you're interested:

Earthday 2013 Adopted Highway Cleanup!

What: Picking up trash along Shady Grove Road between Piney Meeting House and Giant

Earth Day Cleanup in White Oak
Saturday, April 20, 2013 EARTH DAY! 9am-12pm

Come out and enjoy spring while helping the environment! Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection is hosting a neighborhood cleanup with our partner Eyes of Paint Branch. Volunteers are needed to help with trash removal. This event is being held in conjunction with all Anacostia Watershed Society Earth Day Cleanups. We will work together to get all litter out of our streams before it ends up in the Anacostia River.

Capital Crescent Trail Invasive Plant Removal Project
Saturday, April 20, 2013 EARTH DAY! 10am-12pm

The Capital Crescent Trail is one of the most popular trails in the area. Come make it even better, by helping remove the non-native invasive plants that are threatening to take over! Little Falls Watershed Alliance's Sarah Morse will be leading this event, between Bradley Avenue and Bethesda Pool. Contact our office for the meeting point.
Volunteers should dress appropriately, long sleeves and long pants, closed toe shoes, as they will be working in the weeds! Volunteers will be trained on site.

Brookside Gardens Project - Earth Day 2013
Sunday, April 21, 2013 11am-4pm

Join us on Sunday April 21nd as Brookside Gardens celebrates Earth Day. Volunteers will assist with removing non-native plants from our woodland gardens, and replacing them with native trees and shrubs.

Seneca Creek State Park Volunteer Opportunities
Now through Friday, May 31, 2013: 8am-6pm

Seneca Creek State Park needs your help! Volunteers provide enthusiasm, energy and creativity to the wide variety of tasks they accomplish. Volunteers experience many benefits including companionship, a sense of responsibility and enhanced skills. Volunteering is a great way to relieve stress from a busy work week or to earn
community service hours. There are opportunities for everyone! Contact a Ranger for meeting places, times, and to sign up!
